The unique Dimlux IR plant camera is an incredible piece of kit, that works alongside the Maxi Controller to optimise plant health. If they overheat, or run out of water supply, then the sensor will detect that this is happening and lower the level of your lights until it detects that your plants are coping properly again.

This means that your plants should never get into a situation where they cannot transpire, photosynthesise and produce energy and a higher yield! If you already have the Dimlux Maxi Controller and range of lights, then you really are missing out if you do not use this camera. At the very least it will mean you are getting 100% photosynthesis at all times.


At its heart, the Infra-Red camera sounds like quite a simple piece of equipment. It has a camera in it that is equipped to sense the surface temperature of things, with an infra-red sensor. When you mount the camera in your hydroponic grow room, and point it towards the canopy of your crop, it reads the surface temperature of the plant itself and relays this data to the Maxi Controller. Rather than working off air temperature alone, the Maxi Controller can use the air temperature in reference to the plant temperature to figure out exactly how your plants are doing and respond accordingly.


As mentioned above, the camera takes readings of the surface of your plant and relays that to the Maxi Controller. The Maxi Controller can then use this information to know exactly when it should be dimming your lights to make sure your plants continue at full steam. How exactly does it do this though? Well it all boils down to something called VPD, or Vapour Pressure Deficit. The VPD is basically the difference in pressure inside your plants stomata compared to outside of it, which governs how much your plants transpire.

What is VPD

On the underside of your plants leaves, there are tiny little holes called stomata. These holes are how your plant breathes, and therefore govern how much your plant photosynthesises. They do not just open wide all day and stay that way though, they regulate themselves by getting wider or narrower, to either transpire more or less, depending on the environmental conditions.

Inside stomata, it is always 100% humid. Outside the stomata, the temperature and humidity constantly change. Depending on what they are at any given time dictates that the air will have a certain vapour pressure. The leaf surface temperature will have a direct impact on the vapour pressure inside the stomata. So, by knowing the leaf surface temperature, compared to the air temperature (and humidity) you can say what the difference in pressure is (VPD) and whether you need to change it at all.

Essentially, the leaf surface temperature should ALWAYS be lower than that of the surrounding air temperature. This is because the main role of a plant when it is transpiring is to cool itself. It needs to keep itself a degree or two below the temperature of the air, to keep itself working correctly. If the temperature of the leaf surface becomes greater than the air temperature, then the plant either cannot transpire fast enough to deal with all the excess heat, or it has run out of water in the root zone and has nothing left to cool itself down.

Either of these scenarios are very bad and will cost you dearly come harvest time. Working in conjunction with the Maxi Controller, the Infra-Red plant camera will be able to quickly see when the leaf temperature is creeping up towards the air temperature and start to adjust things to compensate. If it is too hot a room temperature, then the lights are dimmed until the surface temperature gets back into check. If you have forgotten to water your plants and they have no water to cool themselves, then the lights will end up turning off, until you have fixed this.

This, of course, means that you have a fantastic fail safe in your room, to safe guard your crop against water/heat stresses. If your climate gets too hot – no problem. If your irrigation pumps fail – no problem. At the worst you may end up with a few extra dark hours than you initially wanted, but at least you do not have a room full of dead plants!


Possibly the hardest thing about using the camera, is simply mounting it somewhere in your grow room to give you a good average sample of your entire room. This involves two key things: finding a suitable space, and then physically mounting the camera up. Shower pole rails make a good start as something to mount on as you can adjust the height of the camera quite easily should you need to. It may take a bit of trial and error, but once in place it is well worth the effort.

Once you have mounted the IR camera up in your room and connected it to the Maxi Controller, your job is pretty much done! It will automatically start assessing the leaf surface temperature and begin adjusting the output of your lamps if it is ever needed. Once you have set the temperature parameters on the controller, then it will work around those at all times, monitoring for the first signs that your plant is suffering from heat stress.


Monitor and record your environmental levels as often as possible. Correctly responding to changes in the environment will prove vital to a successful harvest.

Correct camera placement is key to success! Make sure it is not pointing somewhere that is either a hot spot, or a dark spot. It should be representative of your whole room.
