The OptiFlow brand is exclusive to us designed to bring together great value for money combined with unrivalled performance. Our OptiFlow Hobby Carbon Filter is designed for those that need a top performance carbon filter but without the longer lifespan found in the 'Pro' version. They use the same top quality RC 4/12 virgin activated carbon to give the very best in odour removal but with a smaller 38mm bed that is designed to last for around 12 months.
We understand that a carbon filter is a key component to almost any grow room and for some growers the removal of odour (VOCs) is critical for them to even be able to carry out their indoor gardening. That's why we have taken the time to help develop a carbon filter that meets the needs of the modern urban farmer. Firstly was our choice of carbon. We opted for RC 4/12 Australian mined virgin carbon. This granular carbon gives an enormous surface area for the neutralisation of VOCs whilst maintaining a good flow rate making it highly suitable for grow room use. It's been used in a number of top brands and we felt this was the very best choice for the type of application. Next up we wanted to ensure all the filters featured a minimum of 52% open mesh across the filter housing to further boost air flow rates, this is then aided even further with the cone at the base of the filter. This helps to create a vortex within the body of the filter, helping air to move across as much of it as possible. Not only does this improve the ability for odour neutralising but it also helps to prolong the life of the filter by ensuring the carbon is evenly used during it's time in use. Finally we opted for the use of aluminium as the material for the filter structure, this provides strength but also weight savings. We understand that positioning filters in some grow rooms can be a tricky business so the lighter the better in our opinion!
All carbon filters require a fan in order to function. Choosing the right fan is simple, just take a look at the flow rate of your filter and pick a fan which has a maximum flow rate of lower than that of the filter. All the flow rates shown for these filters represent the maximum air flow they are designed to handle, this is why say to use a fan that is lower than the number shown. If your air flow is too fast then carbon will not be able to effectively neutralise odours. Similarly too slow and the same thing will happen. We usually say to choose a fan somewhere around 15% below the maximum flow rate of the filter and no more than 40%.
Connecting the fan to your filter is easy, the fan must be positioned so the flow of air is pointing away from the filter (there is usually an arrow on most fans showing this) so that the air is drawn through the filter first. Our recommended method is to use a fast clamp to attach the fan directly to the filter itself, just set the flange of the fan against the flange of the filter, wrap the clamp around and tighten it with a screwdriver to give a secure, air-tight connection. For some situations it may not always be possible to use this type of setup for instance due to space. The alternative is to connect the two using a length of ducting. Attach the ducting over the filter flange and secure in place with a ducting clip, run the ducting for the required length (remember to keep bends to a minimum for maximum air flow) then do the same on the fan flange. In both setup scenarios ducting should then be used on output side of the fan to direct your air out of your grow room as required.
OptiFlow Hobby Filters are available in 100mm, 125mm, 150mm and 200mm flange sizes. This gives you a vast amount of fan pairing options for almost any grow room!
